SHAPESHIFTING

Set between Syria and its scattered exile, Shapeshifting follows a generation of electronic musicians who transform sound and dance into acts of memory and resistance amid censorship, collapse, and the uncertain rhythms of a homeland in transformation.

Shapeshifting is an essay film in two parts exploring the inner-worlds of Syrian contemporary music both within Syria and amongst its exilic diaspora in Europe. Through intimate conversational encounters with 14 artists and archival footage from underground raves to daily city life—this film explores electronic music-making and the dance floor as a connector and forger of a singular Syrian experience, as well as a marker for musicians and audiences to mount a politics of difference: from the Syrian state, from previous generations, and, increasingly, from fellow Syrians living markedly different lives in various regions of the Levant, in camps across the Middle East, and in exile across Europe. The film serves as a time capsule, capturing the lives of Syrian musicians during the final years of the Assad regime. Through self-censorship and abstraction, it explores the collective Syrian identity and the profound challenges it faces, including the devastating impacts of war, displacement, and—most critically—the brutal oppression of the Assad regime. The narrative evokes a poignant reflection on the threshold of the regime’s collapse, presenting a deeply textured examination of a society on the brink of transformative change.

Bio – Filmography

Yamen Mekdad is a London and Damascus based Syrian artist, researcher, and community organizer whose practice explores the intersection of sound, geography, and the human condition. He has co-founded several collectives—including Dandana, Sawt of the Earth, Makkam, and Sadaa Sound Syndicate—and serves as Creative Director of the Syrian Cassette Archives and Rock Paper Scissors, as well as co-founder and audio curator of the Syrian Arts and Culture Festival (SACF). His work, rooted in sonic research and the activation of endangered archives, has been featured on platforms such as SOAS, NTS, and Radio AlHara and at international festivals and institutions. He also directed Sawt Syria with Boiler Room, and most recently premiered his essay-film Shapeshifting at Sheffield DocFest, which reflects on Syria’s underground music scene and diaspora in the years leading up to the fall of the Assad regime.

Juline Hadaya is a London-based artist and filmmaker, of Syrian origin, whose interdisciplinary practice spans sound, image, and sculpture. Her work critically engages with memory regimes within both digital and non-digital geographies of violence. Drawing from archival research, digital media, and lived experience, Hadaya’s practice navigates the interplay between intimate subjectivities and collective imaginaries. Her approach foregrounds narrative as both method and form, weaving conceptual precision with poetic sensibility. She is currently completing her master’s in Visual Anthropology at Goldsmiths University in London.
